People's Republic of China/Global Environment Facility (PRC/GEF) Partnership on Land Degradation in Dryland Ecosystems
PartnersThe principal partner is the People's Republic of China, which has committed to addressing land degradation as a fundamental element of sustainable development in the country's western region, and seeks more effective and efficient use of scarce resources, both domestic and external to address this issue. Key sectoral ministries in PRC include
The Global Environment Facility's (GEF) interest in financing activities to prevent and control land degradation comes from the nature and extent of its link to global environment change. Destroyed forests and degraded soil and water resources imperil biodiversity, induce climate change and disturb hydrologic cycles. Other partners could include the implementing agencies of GEF, the World Bank, UNDP and UNEP, all of which have significant investments in environment and sustainable natural resources management in PRC. UNDP has supported the National Action Program to Combat Desertification, which is now receiving assistance from the Global Mechanism of the Convention to Combat Desertification. Many other multilateral and bilateral development agencies, as well as national and international NGOs, also have natural resources projects in PRC. Many lessons can be distilled from these projects that can serve to inform future activities under the partnership. The private sector, including those companies with current or potential infrastructure investments in western PRC that could be at risk from environmental degradation are further potential partners.
