August 2002

The Forests and Grasslands Task Force of the China Council for International Development on Environment and Development (CCICED) publishes its fifth newsletter.

It also publishes a summary of proceedings of a Workshop on Payment Schemes for Environmental Services held in April 2002.

The Task Force presents its final report to the CCICED at the Council's annual meeting on November 23, 2002. The report is a synthesis of key findings from Task Force Phase II work as described above and will include key policy recommendations emerging from this work. The report will also identify issues that merit further study beyond the lifetime of the Task Force.

China Human Development Report 2002: Making Green Development A Choice

This third China national human development report is commissioned by UNDP China and prepared by a team of eminent development professionals under the leadership of the Stockholm Environment Institute. It was developed over the past two years during which China has undergone many significant changes. The report captures the main changes in the environment and sustainable development, while providing an overall impression of where China is today, how it evolved to the present situation, and what options there are for the future.

Millenium Ecosystem Assessment

The Millenium Assessment is a four-year process that commenced in April 2001, that is designed to improve the management of the world's natural and managed ecosystems by helping to meet the needs of decision-makers and the public for peer-reviewed, policy-relevant scientific information on the condition of ecosystems, consequences of ecosystem change, and options for response. One of the approved sub-global assessments is an integrated ecosystem assessment of Western PRC.

Land Degradation Assessment for Drylands (LADA)

The Land Degradation Assessment for Drylands (LADA) will generate up-to-date ecological, social, and economic and technical information, including a combination of traditional knowledge and modern science, to guide integrated and cross-sectoral planning and management in drylands. LADA responds to the need to strengthen support to land degradation assessment at international and national levels.

13 May 2002 A new publication, Global Alarm: Dust and Sandstorms from the World’s Drylands, and available in English and Chinese, documents PRC’s experience with dust and sandstorms and brings in case examples from all over the world. Further information and the downloadable book can be found here.

A donor roundtable is held at the ADB Resident Mission in Beijing to update donors and other international organizations on the PRC/GEF Partnership and to solicit comments on the draft CPF outline.

An Inception Workshop is held at Sustainable Forestry Research Center in Beijing, bringing together the program management office personnel, consultants and senior representatives of central agencies to discuss the outline of the CPF and agree on a workplan.

January 2002 A contract is signed with Deutsche ForstService GmbH, in association with GITEC Consult and the Sustainable Forestry Research Center (SFRC) of the Chinese Academy of Forestry, to provide consulting services under the PRC/GEF Partnership on Land Degradation Technical Assistance.

The World Bank publishes China: Air, Land and Water: Environmental Priorities for a New Millenium. The report assesses current status and trends for land degradation, forest and biodiversity, water, air and environmental management, and identifies issues and challenges facing China's environment over the next decade.

30-31 July 2001

Two-day Workshop on PRC/GEF Partnership on Land Degradation is held at the Chinese Academy of Forestry on the PRC/GEF Partnership.
