Five case studies were funded by ADB as part of the strategy development exercise. These are meant to help ground the analysis on practical experience from promising environmental management approaches and from the generation of new ideas regarding the mainstreaming of environmental considerations into economic and sectoral policy, planning, and programming.

These case studies were conducted in the Fiji Islands, Marshall Islands, Vanuatu, Tuvalu and the Federated States of Micronesia. They are focused on tourism and resort development, waste management, planning and policy formulation, and protected area management and biodiversity conservation.

Several of these studies are being carried out in partnership with regional organizations or NGOs including the South Pacific Regional Environment Programme, and the World Wildlife Fund South Pacific Program (WWF-SPP) and we anticipate the wider use of strategic partnerships for implementation of the new strategy.

Except for the case study in Mele Catchment Area in Vanuatu where only an update of the activities is available, all the other four case studies have their final reports linked here:

• Application of Traditional Environmental Management Practices, Knowledge and Values to Solid Waste Management on Majuro Atoll, Republic of Marshall Islands
• Mainstreaming Environmental Considerations and Traditional Knowledge and Practices into Policies and Programs for the Mele Catchment Area in Vanuatu
• The Funafuti Conservation Area, Funafuti Atoll, Tuvalu: Drawing Lessons for Future Marine Conservation Planning and Management
• Strategic Environmental Assessment of Fiji Islands' National Tourism Plan
