RETA 6039: Pacific Region Environmental Strategy
Why an ADB Strategy?The current Pacific Strategy for the New Millennium acknowledges the direct links between poverty reduction and environmental management, and calls for the integration of environmental and natural resources dimensions into all ADB assistance to the region. However, it does not present specific guidance on how to incorporate environmental concerns into ADB operations nor an agenda of direct interventions to achieve environmental improvement. ObjectiveThe new ADB Pacific Region Environment Strategy aims to formulate a strong and well-articulated regional environmental strategy based on a review of the major environmental challenges in the region that clearly formulates the strategic objectives and activities for ADB's assistance for 2005-2009. The environmental strategy will detail specific modalities for intervention, through country and/or regional environmental assessments, technical assistance, and lending programs. It will also ensure that environmental considerations are integrated into these activities. This strategic framework in its various components will constitute an important input to the new Pacific Regional Strategy for 2005-2009, whichis is also under preparation.
