ETESP and the Environment

The December 2004 earthquake and tsunami caused enormous loss of life and widespread damage in Aceh and Nias. It also caused unprecedented and extensive environmental degradation. ADB is one of many international donors and agencies assisting the Government of Indonesia (GoI) in the reconstruction and rehabilitation effort. However, this effort, if not done in a sustainable manner, has the potential to cause further environmental impacts.

The ADB and GoI are committed to implementing the reconstruction and rehabilitation process in an environmentally sustainable manner. This includes undertaking spatial planning that balances infrastructure needs with environmental constraints; systematically assessing potential environmental impacts of all subprojects proposed for ETESP support; promoting ecologically sustainable livelihoods; and encouraging sustainable reconstruction methods.
