The Asian Development Bank and the People's Republic of China are partners in protecting its environment as well as promoting economic development. This video shows five projects where ADB is assisting the PRC to promote cleaner air and safer water in its cities and combat soil erosion and desertification in rural areas.

One project in the mountains north of Beijing has helped farmers by stabilizing the thin topsoil. This has reduced contamination of reservoirs that provide the capital's drinking water. In Shanghai, ADB is helping with the US$1 billion clean-up of the historic Suzhou Creek. Two projects in Xi'an and Tongchuan, in Shaanxi province, have greatly reduced air pollution, thus protecting people's health as well as safeguarding the PRC's cultural heritage.

In the northern province of Gansu, ADB is helping to develop an integrated approach to combat desertification, which affects 30 percent of the PRC's land area.
