Preparing a technical and economic feasibility study for the TAP Project. This feasibility study, along with the other listed studies, will be used by the governments of Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and, possibly, India as a basis for the

  • intergovernmental framework agreement required to implement project construction, operation, and gas sales
  • gas sales and purchase contracts between Turkmenistan
  • purchasers of gas from the Dauletabad field

Assisting the GMS countries to prepare a 10-year subregional strategy and a 5-year action plan for a sustainable tourism sector, and to provide a framework for the development and implementation of the GMS tourism flagship program

 

Greater Mekong Subregion Biodiversity Conservation Corridors Initiative
Preparing a GMS BCC development strategic framework (2005-2014) and action plan (2005-2008). The strategic framework will

  • identify and prioritize terrestrial BCC of strategic importance from a biodiversity conservation as well as development perspective
  • review and analyze conservation and economic development policies that need to be rationalized and harmonized among GMS countries for effective and sustainable functioning of BCC

Regional Financial Sector Development
Harmonizing and strengthening banking sector regulation with regard to risk management, financial disclosure standards, and the regulatory framework for corporate governance. The RETA also aims to foster knowledge sharing among participating countries. The RETA is part of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation Program initiated by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in 1996, and complements other program initiatives by facilitating financial sector development and cooperation within the region.

Regional Support to Address the Outbreak of SARS
Providing emergency assistance to members countries in the region to strengthen health systems' capacities to prevent and contain outbreaks of SARS contagion over the next few months. ADB will work closely with governments, WHO, and other stakeholders, in particular NGOs, to identify the gaps, both quantitatively (how much is needed) and qualitatively (where are the resources needed). In the medium-term, the steps taken to respond to SARS can also improve the capacity of health systems to confront other communicable diseases

Regional Initiative to Eliminate Micronutrient Malnutrition in Asia through Public-Private Partnership
Building partnerships between the public and private sectors to enrich nutrition by improving consumer choice in the marketplace. Increasing awareness of and skills on how to prevent infection among the more vulnerable groups by:

  • training teachers in using ICT-based learning materials and preventive education efforts in schools
  • developing a strategy of decentralized development of materials down to the provincial/district level§ developing and disseminating educational radio programs and audio tapes
  • systematically collecting, storing, and repackaging innovative education materials in an expanded clearinghouse of information and materials support
  • establishing a geographic information system (GIS)
  • direct targeting interventions among special and interstitial populations, in collaboration with community-based organizations and nongovernment organizations (NGOs)

  • identify and analyze the DMCs' national policies, programs, projects, and initiatives concerning disabilities and poverty to be used as a basis for action plans
