Water

Many regional water resources cross boundaries and thus require thoughtful coordination of their use to ensure sustainable development and mutual benefit among all countries.

Based on joint requests, ADB can support joint projects for

  • planning, development, and management of shared water resources, including the mapping of physical and institutional resources
  • information sharing
  • establishment of a regional legal regime encompassing dispute resolution mechanism

In particular, ADB supports regional and subregional initiatives to exchange knowledge and information among its developing member countries. Current examples include the Greater Mekong Subregion, the Pacific Islands, and Central Asia. It supports the regional networking of water utilities for better management and information sharing. We also help to create regional linkages with global networks, such as the Global Water Partnership, and are taking a leading role in major events such as the 3rd World Water Forum (WWF).
