RETA 6285: Strengthening Country Safeguard Systems

In December 2005, ADB approved RETA 6285: Strengthening Country Safeguard Systems. The regional technical assistance project's primary purpose is to set out the approach and methodology for assessing the potential application of country safeguard systems through in-depth country assessments. The assessments involve analysis of

  • equivalence between developing member countries' country safeguard systems and ADB's current safeguard policy objectives and principles and
  • developing member country capacities, including track record and practices, to deliver safeguards.

In-depth case studies focused on five countries involved in significant ADB projects with safeguard implications were conducted in People's Republic of China, India, Kyrgyz Republic, Philippines, and Viet Nam.
