ADB Working with Labor Unions
Most development policies have impacts on employment and societies’ living conditions; hence, the voice of working men and women needs to be heard. Labor unions have an essential role in promoting good working conditions and raising awareness on employment issues. ADB and unions share many areas of common interest: reducing poverty, promoting employment-generating growth, social protection systems, labor standards, transparency, and improving the status of women. For these reasons, strengthened dialogue with labor unions was identified as an important element of ADB's Social Protection Strategy. ADB has a variety of exchanges between unions and ADB, most significantly with the Asian Labor Network on International Finance Institutions (ALNI), and the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions–Asian and Pacific Regional Organization (ICFTU-APRO). Conducting regular dialogues between labor unions and international financial institutions (IFIs) will help to bring labor issues to the forefront of development and promote economic and social development.
