Transport Operations
Transport and communications is the largest and fastest-growing sector of ADB’s operations. Its share of total lending rose from 16% in the 1970s to 20% in the 1990s and to 33% for 2000-2005. Transport operations in India and the People’s Republic of China have largely driven this upsurge.

To date, ADB transport sector has allotted most of its funds for public sector projects on roads and highways (76%), followed by railways and ports, shipping and waterways. The civil aviation sub-sector has received 2% of transport lending funds.
Transport lending in the private sector also focused on roads and highways projects, with funding at 44% of the total, followed by ports, waterways and shipping projects at 32% and civil aviation at 24%. (See chart below.)
