Facts on ADB Assistance

Overall Funding: US$891 million
  • ADB has committed US$891 million in grants and loans to the tsunami-affected countries of India, Indonesia, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
  • It is the largest grant program in the Bank’s history.
  • The largest proportion of funding is allocated for the restoration of families’ livelihoods.
  • Other major funding areas include the rehabilitation of rural infrastructure, construction of roads and bridges, construction and refurbishment of families’ homes, and the development of water and sanitation systems in affected communities.
  • All ADB-administered programs have built-in environmental and social safeguards, to ensure that development is carried out with the inclusion of communities, and mindful of environmental concerns.
  • The overriding purpose of ADB assistance is to help communities recover from the worst effects of the tsunami, and to help families permanently lift themselves out of poverty.
