VP Jin Visits Maldives Tsunami-Hit Islands
31 Jan 2005

ADB Vice President Liqun Jin visited the Maldives from 25 to 26 January 2005 to see tsunami-affected areas and discuss ADB assistance with senior government officials.

Mr. Jin, accompanied by Richard Vokes, a Director with ADB's South Asia Regional Department, spoke to tsunami victims and visited camps for internally displaced persons during field trips to the islands of Guraidhoo, Vilufushi and Kolhufushi.

At the capital of Male, the VP also informed Maldives President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Finance and Treasury Minister Mohamed Jaleel that ADB is proposing, subject to approval by the Board of Directors, initial new assistance of $20 million in grants to help the post-tsunami reconstruction and rehabilitation effort.
