Helping to rebuild Banda Aceh
7 Mar 2005

BANDA ACEH: Roughly half the city of Banda Aceh, on the northwest tip of Sumatra, Indonesia, was reduced to ruins by the double blows of a powerful earthquake and giant tsunami on 26 December 2004.

Eight weeks after the calamity, survivors are rebuilding shattered lives. As bulldozers and shovels remove debris from streets, shops and homes, the sounds of hammering and sawing testify to renewed hope after the heartbreak.

To assist the reconstruction, ADB has mobilized funds of around $65 million from ongoing projects in Indonesia and is discussing with the government a large emergency package of grant assistance from its recently-established ADB Asian Tsunami Fund. ADB will help rehabilitation and reconstruction in several sectors, including housing, health, education, water supply and sanitation, roads and bridges, and agriculture and irrigation.
