UNHABITAT will explore the possibility of building a capacity building component in ADB loan projects in one of the Central Asian Republics in 2006.
ADB's Mekong Department presented a proposal for collaboration with UNHABITAT for a Water Supply and Sanitation Investment Project in selected secondary towns along the economic corridors in GMS. The proposal could build on a rapid appraisal recently conducted by UNHABITAT for 14 secondary towns in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Viet Nam and Yunnan province of the People's Republic of China.
ADB and UNDP plan to undertake the following:
ADB has undertaken project preparatory activities for Indonesia's Water Supply and Sanitation Project, which focuses on small to medium sized towns. ADB will also begin preparatory activities for a sanitation project for large urban areas, the Metropolitan Sanitation Management and Health project.
UNHABITAT will participate in the project formulation process and develop a capacity building component for a total of US$ 2 million.
ADB has approved the Henan Wastewater Management and Water Supply Project in the PRC. UNHABITAT will explore the possibility of supporting the project with a capacity building component (US$ 1 million).
UNHABITAT will explore the possibility of supporting the ADB loan project (Central Region Small and Medium Towns Project, USD $96 million) with a US$ 1 million capacity building component in 2006.
Human Values-based Water and Sanitation Education
ADB and UNHABITAT will explore the possibility of using tools for Human Values-based Water and Sanitation Education (HVWSE), jointly developed by UNHABITAT and SEAMEO, in ADB projects involving curriculum development and/or teacher training. Possible uses would be for projects in Lao PDR, Viet Nam, Kyrgyz Republic and Mongolia.
ADB's Education specialists will be invited to the start up HVWSE workshop organized by UNHABITAT in PRC in May 2006.
