ADB at the 3rd IUCN World Conservation Congress

The World Conservation Congress is a forum for exchanging knowledge on how best to conserve nature. It takes place every three to four years and provides unique networking opportunities for governments, organizations, and individuals.

SPOTLIGHT
Music, Film, Wetlands and You
ADB Conservation Platform
19 November, 5:00-7:00pm

Find out more about ADB's exciting presentation on Thailand's IWRM scheme in the Ping River basin, and PRC's innovative project on wetlands protection in the Sanjiang Plain.

The Congress has three elements:

  1. Commissions at Work (5-17 November)
  2. Each of IUCN's six commissions will meet to discuss and make decisions that influence the global conservation agenda.

  3. World Conservation Forum (18-20 November)
  4. Addressing the world's most pressing sustainable development challenges, the Forum will present a comprehensive assessment of the state of biodiversity on our planet.

  5. Member's Business Assembly (21-25 November)
  6. The only global democratic assembly in which governments and non-government organizations can engage together, setting the conservation agenda for the next five years.

The Congress features four main themes:

  • Ecosystem Management- Bridging sustainability and productivity
  • Health, Poverty and Conservation- Responding to the challenge of human well-being
  • Biodiversity Loss and Species Extinction- Managing risk in a changing world
  • Markets, Business and the Environment- Strengthening corporate social responsibility, law and policy

ADB President Tadao Chino will lead ADB's participation in the Forum with a keynote speech at the World Conservation Forum Closing Plenary on 20 November.

The Cooperation Fund for the Water Sector will sponsor the following ADB Activites in the Congress:

Conservation Platform: Water Voices Documentary Series (19 November, 17:00 -19:00 PM)

Conservation platforms are high profile events featuring presentations on regional programs, initiatives, film screening, book launches and alliance announcements.

ADB's conservation platform, entitled Music, Film, Wetlands and You, will focus on

  • Sharing water resources in the Ping River (Thailand)
  • Protecting and rehabilitating wetlands in the Sanjiang Plain (People's Republic of China)

These workshops aim to provide regional or sectoral perspectives on key issues.

ADB will also serve as panel members in the following workshops:

  • Water Resources Management for Poverty Alleviation in the Greater Mekong (18 November; 11:30 - 14:00)
  • ASEAN Collaboration in Protected Area Management (19 November; 11:30 - 14:00)
  • Dams: Implement the rights and risk approach to stakeholder participation (November 19; 1930 - 2200)
