Abstract

Arsenic contamination has become a significant health threat in rural Cambodia, where people highly rely on groundwater for drinking. Several cases of skin diseases and cancers were confirmed as cases of arsenicosis or arsenic poisoning. An estimated 320,000 people are at risk

This PDA supported the performance verification process of the Kanchan Arsenic Filter (KAF) as an effective, suitable, and affordable arsenic mitigation technology for Cambodia's rural areas. KAF was developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Cambodia's Ministry of Rural Development (MRD) and the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC) conducted the verification process.

Expected Results

  • Adoption of KAF for arsenic mitigation
  • Increased capacity within ITC and MRD for testing arsenic mitigation technologies
  • Increased public awareness on the use of KAF
  • Improved quality of water

  • Supported the construction of 40 KAF in Cambodia's Kandal and Prey Veng provinces. About 99% of all filtered water samples met the Cambodian arsenic guideline.
  • Provided training on the use of KAF, benefitting 31 households or about 200 people
  • Built knowledge and capacity of ITC on water treatment and field research, especially in quality assurance and quality control
  • Built knowledge and capacity of MRD in household water treatment technologies, verification process, field work, and project
  • management
