Barani refers to areas in Pakistan where dry farming is practiced and is marked by high levels of poverty. They are not served by canal irrigation and rely highly on erratic rainfall. As such, agricultural production in these areas is precarious. Farmers normally minimize inputs to reduce the risk of loss in the event of drought and mainly depend on off-farm income.
In Punjab, barani agriculture contributes only 10% of the total agricultural production, but has a high potential for crop production. To increase crop production in Punjab's barani areas, this PDA evaluated and disseminated rainwater harvesting techniques and introduced efficient water management methods and irrigation systems.
