Secondary benefits - what are the multiplier effects?

Benefits of a project can be divided into the primary outputs, (for example electricity generated by hydropower; irrigated agriculture; bulk water supply for domestic industrial and municipal use; areas with reduced risk of flooding; and recreation) and secondary or multiplier effects.

Secondary effects are more difficult to quantify and depend on the nature of the project. They can include improved access to water for other household needs, improved health conditions, reservoir fisheries, increased local economic activity, improved access to markets via access roads, employment in construction and tourism, recession agriculture in the reservoir margins, recreation, etc.
