Addressing outstanding social and environmental problems

There is a growing recognition that many large dam projects have had unanticipated social and environmental impacts and preparedness to address the consequences. A number of examples exist where governments and financing agencies have initiated programs to resolve the problems of the past. These may be focused on individual or community-based programs.

The World Commission on Dams also considered that resolving past problems was a key factor in demonstrating that lessons had been learned and incorporated into planning processes and implementation.
