Making the Annual Meeting a Sustainable Event

The Annual Meeting of ADB's Board of Governors is a sustainable event.

The Annual Meeting of ADB’s Board of Governors attracts between 2500 and 5000 participants from across the world. Typically, the host country provides a venue, security, transport, accommodation, communication systems, as well as English-speaking support staff.

To ensure that the legacy of the meeting is a positive one, ADB partners with the host country to assess and improve the environmental, social and economic aspects of the event. Efforts are made to safeguard the environment, develop skills in the local community, increase tourism, create new business opportunities, and share the host country’s traditions and history.

International standards are followed in labor and other laws; physical security of delegates and workers; security of food and information; sustainable procurement and waste management; ambient noise and temperature in the venue; and community ownership of the event. Other areas of action include improving management practices, which can lead to possible cost savings.

An Event Sustainability program was first introduced at the 47th Annual Meeting, which was held in May 2014 in Astana, Kazakhstan.
