Biography: Bindu N. Lohani
Mr. Bindu N. Lohani is Vice-President for Knowledge Management and Sustainable Development.
Mr. Lohani is responsible for ADB’s Economics and Research Department (Office of the Chief Economist), Office of Regional Economic Integration, Regional and Sustainable Development Department (RSDD), and the Office of Information Systems and Technology.
Prior to assuming his current post, Mr. Lohani was Vice-President (Finance and Administration) of ADB and was responsible for the operations of the following departments and offices: Treasury Department; Controller’s Department; Budget, Personnel, and Management Systems Department; Office of Information Systems and Technology; Office of Administrative Services; Office of the Secretary and Office of the General Counsel.
Mr. Lohani joined ADB in 1985 as Environment Specialist and became Manager, Environment Division in 1995. He later served as Deputy Director, Infrastructure, Energy, and Financial Sectors Department (West) in 1997 before being appointed Secretary of ADB in 1999. He later served as Director General of RSDD.
Before joining ADB, Mr. Lohani worked with the Department of Housing and Physical Planning, Department of Roads, and Department of Local Development in Nepal. During that period, he was involved in the design, construction and management of various infrastructure projects. He has also taught at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and was Division Chairman at AIT's Environmental Division.
Mr. Lohani completed several management development programs, including administrative training for senior government staff of Nepal, Executive Program conducted by the Business School of the University of Chicago; Management Development Program by Cornell University; and also programs organized by Arthur D. Little School of Management, and Corporate Leadership program at Yale University.
Mr. Lohani holds a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, and a Master's degree and Doctoral degrees in Environmental Engineering. Mr. Lohani was conferred the Degree of Doctor of the University by the Griffith University, Australia in recognition of his distinguished contributions to environment and to the university. He was also conferred the University Medal and Honorary Doctorate by the Angeles University Foundation, Philippines and the University of Cordilleras. Mr. Lohani has authored more than 200 publications, including eight books.
Mr. Lohani is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) of United States - the highest professional distinction accorded to an engineer - for his work on economic-cum-environmental approach to sustainable development. He is a Diplomat of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers (awarded for excellence in the practice of environmental engineering) and is a licensed professional engineer. In October 2007, Mr. Lohani was elected to the rank of AAAS Fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Council for world leadership in development country planning for integrated economic-cum-environmental sustainable development through protection of natural/social resources.
