Banking Sector Reform
The level and extent of resolving structural banking sector problems in the aftermath of the Asian financial crisis have varied across the region, resulting in different degrees of stability. Asian economies are taking a range of approaches to restructure their banking sectors in line with their specific characteristics and complexity of problems faced. At the same time new challenges and opportunities are arising from global financial market trends and developments and from World Trade Organization commitments. Banking sector restructuring measures, in turn, have impacted on the way nonfinancial enterprises function and raise financing.
This seminar will bring together senior policymakers, private sector practitioners, and analysts to present their views on banking sector reforms under way in Asia. The speakers will focus on the following key issues:
- What competitive forces will shape Asian banking over the next decade and what regulatory challenges doe they entail?
- What challenges and opportunities will increased competition by foreign banks create for domestic banks?
- What is the extent of resolving nonperforming loans across the region, and are there any signs of new trouble?
- What is the future of corporate lending in Asia?
- Are corporate governance practices in Asian banking improving postcrisis?
