Domestic Credit Rating Agencies in Asia -- Roles, Issues, and Challenges
The 1997 Asian financial crisis underscored the need for strengthening the financial and
corporate sectors and developing bond markets in many East Asian countries. International experience has shown that credit-rating agencies play an important role in these areas.
The seminar will address the following issues:
- How has the credit-rating industry in Asia evolved and what is its
current state?
- What role can international rating agencies play in developing bond markets and the credit-rating industry in Asia?
- How should governments help develop the domestic credit-rating industry? How and how much should governments regulate domestic credit-rating agencies?
- Should harmonization of ratings and rating practices across Asia be a target in developing domestic credit rating agencies?
- What are the latest developments in structured finance markets in East Asia and how can credit-rating agencies in the region contribute to developing these markets?
