A Single Currency for East Asia -- Lessons from Europe
In the wake of the 1997 Asian financial crisis, the pace of monetary and financial
cooperation in East Asia has picked up, advancing most in information exchange and policy dialogue, and resource pooling and sharing. Less progress has been achieved in macroeconomic coordination and exchange rate policies.
Major issues to be discussed include the following:
- Is there a case for a single currency in East Asia? Is a single currency feasible in East Asia? What are the key issues and challenges in the adoption of a single currency by East Asia?
- What are the transitional steps on the road to a single currency in East Asia? How far should East Asia go?
- What are the lessons for East Asia from the European experience?
