ADB Support to Women Entrepreneurs in Kazakhstan
During the midterm review of the Kazakhstan: Small and Medium Enterprises Investment Program (Tranche 2), the ADB project team visited beneficiaries and found the women entrepreneurs to have challenged stereotypes traditionally linked to women-led SMEs. These women entrepreneurs have been expanding medical centers, providing legal notary services, importing shoes and apparel, running a stationery and printing shop with state-of-the-art digital equipment, and managing a network of preschools to meet market demand. SMEs are diversifying the economy, creating new jobs and opening new frontiers for women.
Annual Country Portfolio Review Meeting
On 22 July, ADB jointly with the Ministry of National Economy held an Annual Portfolio Review meeting to discuss the performance of the country portfolio in 2014 and the first half of 2015, cross-sectoral issues identified in project processing and implementation, and measures to address them. Representatives of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Investment and Development, and Entrepreneurship Development Fund Damu attended the meeting.
Workshop on Economics of Climate Change
On 16 July, a national workshop to discuss the findings of the report prepared under the ADB-funded regional technical assistance on Economics of Climate Change in Central and West Asia was held in Astana. The government officials, development partners and NGOs exchanged views on the cost and benefits of greenhouse gases emission mitigation measures in energy and transport sectors. The participants also discussed the mechanisms of attracting international investments to low carbon project development.
ADB Vice-President Wencai Zhang Visits Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan Prime Minister Karim Massimov, National Economy Minister and ADB Governor Erbolat Dossaev, and Finance Minister Bakhyt Sultanov held meetings with ADB Vice-President Wencai Zhang on 20-21 May 2015 in Astana. They discussed development challenges, government priorities, and ADB’s support in meeting Kazakhstan's needs. In his keynote speech at the Astana Economic Forum, the vice-president stressed the importance of physical and social infrastructure reforms, and regional integration to sustain growth in Asia. In a meeting between Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev and the forum's keynote speakers, Vice-President Zhang underscored that macroeconomic stability, infrastructure development, and diversification are vital to long-term sustainable growth and in attaining high-income status.
Tripartite Portfolio Review Meeting
The ADB Kazakhstan Resident Mission conducted a tripartite portfolio review meeting on 24 April 2015 to evaluate progress made against the country portfolio and project performance targets, and discuss other related matters. Representatives of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of National Economy, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Investment and Development, and Damu Entrepreneurship Development Fund attended the meeting.
ADB Holds Youth Debates in Kazakhstan
The Partnerships for Development debates organized by ADB and the Kazakh Legal Academy gathered over 30 young Kazakh people on 4-5 April 2015 in Astana. The debates aim to engage youth in policy discussions and development, and deepen awareness about ADB. Three winners will go to Baku, Azerbaijan to participate in ADB's 48th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors.
ADB Meets Kazakhstan Minister of Investment and Development
ADB Kazakhstan Resident Mission Country Director Jinlin Yang met with Kazakhstan Minister of Investment and Development Asset Issekeshev on 2 April 2015 in Astana to discuss the government's request to provide advisory support for institutional reforms. They also touched on the actions to enhance project implementation.
ADB Meets with Kazakhstan Finance Minister
Kazakhstan Country Director Jinlin Yang met with Kazakhstan Finance Minister Bakhyt Sultanov on 19 January in Astana. The minister briefed the country director about the government's growth projections, and discussed how ADB can best support Kazakhstan to maintain macroeconomic stability and social development in the vulnerable situation.
ADB Meets with Governor of Kyzylorda Region
Kazakhstan Resident Mission Country Director Jinlin Yang met with Governor Krymbek Kusherbayev of the Kyzylorda region on 15 January in Astana to discuss potential cooperation. The governor gave a briefing on the region's development and requested support in diversifying the economy. Country Director Yang responded that ADB will consider support to regional inclusive growth with the central government.
ADB, Kazakhstan Discuss Regional Cooperation Initiatives
Kazakhstan Resident Mission Country Director Jinlin Yang met with Kazakhstan Vice-Minister of National Economy and CAREC national focal point Timur Zhaxylykov on 15 January in Astana to discuss prospects for cooperation under the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation program. Yang thanked the government for fruitful cooperation and expressed readiness to further support regional initiatives.
