GMS Summit
Making It Happen: A Common Strategy on Cooperation for Growth, Equity and Prosperity for the Greater Mekong Subregion

Background

The idea of the GMS Summit was conceived during the visit of His Excellency Thaksin Shinawatra, Prime Minister of the Royal Thai Government to the Kingdom of Cambodia on 18 June 2001.

At the ASEAN Summit held in October 2001 in Brunei Darussalam, His Excellency Samdech Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Royal Government of Cambodia, consulted with the Leaders of the GMS countries about the idea of holding a GMS Summit in November 2002, to which the Leaders agreed.

Objectives

The GMS Summit will demonstrate the political commitment of the GMS Leaders to cooperate for the growth and development of the subregion.

Expected Outputs

This will result in the identification of high priority programs where coordinated donors' effort is required in order to achieve a major impact on the development of the region.
