Training funded by the Asian Development Bank in Bangladesh has increased the ability of community organizations and government health workers to fight HIV/AIDS.

The training program-called Strengthen the Capacity of Nongovernment Organizations/Community Based Organizations Involved in HIV/AIDS Prevention, Care and/or Treatment of Vulnerable and High-risk Groups-was carried out by the HIV/AIDS and STD Alliance Bangladesh. The group reported that the trainees can now design appropriate prevention initiatives and respond effectively to persons infected with HIV/AIDS through counseling and testing.

Strengthening Coordination

The group cited that it was successful in bringing together the community workers and government employees. Coordination between the two has increased as a result of the training. This can help strengthen field activities where both parties are involved in HIV/AIDS prevention and care.

Additional Training Needed

The organization noted that the 163 trainees were motivated to further develop their skills in HIV/AIDS prevention. The trainees suggested that more government employees and community and nongovernment workers be trained. They said there is a tremendous need for such skills in Bangladesh, where the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS remain largely taboo.

The group proposed further training for the same participants, as well as training for additional personnel.
