Ways to halve the world's underweight, stunted, and micronutrient-deficient children, most of whom live in Asia - the objective of the World Summit for Children (WSC) - are prescribed in this publication.

This double volume, which includes country studies, summarizes the findings of a joint effort of the Asian Development Bank and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) on investments to address the needs of Asian children and achieve the objective of WSC.

The book

  • assesses child nutrition in Asia
  • provides a core agenda for funding agencies interested in improving children's prospects
  • identifies improved maternal and child nutrition strategies
  • estimates 10-year investment requirements to meet WSC goals
  • discusses mainstreaming health and nutrition programs for poor women and children
  • identifies the success factors in community-based programs to improve child survival and development
  • sets priorities for programs encompassing service delivery, social mobilization, management, and capacity building
  • highlights the need to reallocate resources from wasteful untargeted public food subsidies to productive and cost-effective purposes
