Roundtable Meeting of Chief Justices and Ministers of Justice

Concluding Remarks

Barry Metzger
General Counsel
Asian Development Bank

On behalf of my colleagues here at the Bank, we have been honored by your presence at this Roundtable Meeting. Today's gathering has been a dialogue among, as I noted at the outset, the most eminent group of legal and judicial officials ever to grace these halls. We hope as well that it can be the initial step in a continuing dialogue among Justices and Ministers from around the region, and between you, your institutions and the Bank.

We very much hope that you will maintain the contact with the Bank that has been established here today. We will have an opportunity to meet with many of you in individual country meetings during this week, and the attorneys in the Office of the General Counsel travel frequently throughout the region. They will be delighted to meet with you and your colleagues for further discussion of the themes we have begun to explore today. We also hope that you will keep us informed of new legal developments in your countries.

Here at the Bank we are interested in working with you to expand our Law and Development programming, especially in economic law and legal issues relating to governance. We and you are also regularly engaged in dialogues with Ministries of Finance, Economics and Planning in each country of the region, and we do hope that the discussions we have had today will be beneficial to your, and to our, ongoing discussions with such ministries.

In each of these respects, we look forward to maintaining and expanding the lines of communication with each of you, and to intensifying our dialogue on law and development and legal and judicial reform in the months and years ahead.
