Gender, Macroeconomics, and Trade New Directions for Policy
OER Briefing Theater Rm 1402W ADB Headquarters, Manila, Philippines
13 November 2002 , 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Purpose

During the past ten years, national and international institutions, including the regional development banks, have begun to pay greater attention to gender in economic policymaking processes. Recent events and trends in the world economy, including the Asian economic crisis, has brought "social policy" issues to the forefront of macroeconomic and trade policy debates. These trends are supported by a growing literature that shows both theoretically and empirically how gender inequalities affect, and are in turn affected by, macroeconomic and international trade policies. Some of the research and thinking around these issues have been published in two special issues of the journal, World Development, which appeared in November 1995 and July 2000.

Objectives

This Seminar will discuss some of the recent literature on gender, economic growth and trade in South and East Asia.

Questions to be addressed include:

  • Has economic growth increased the quality of life for women and closed gender gaps in East Asia?
  • What has been the impact of trade openness on participation in the labor force, their earnings, and their conditions of work in South and East Asia?
  • How can current trade and investment policy discussions and agreements become more gender-sensitive?
  • What are some new directions for incorporating gender into global and regional economic policy making?

Target Participants

This is an in in-house seminar for all interested ADB staff and the six GAD Specialists from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam together.
