Second International Roundtable on Managing for Development Results
Marrakech, Morocco, 4-5 February 2004

The roundtable discussion ended on 5 February. Representatives of more than 50 countries and 20 international organizations, and major development organizations endorsed a joint memorandum with a set of core principles and an action plan that can serve as an initial foundation for building a broader consensus and taking effective action in the years to come.

Introduction

ADB, together with the African Development Bank (AfDB), European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Inter-American Development Bank, the World Bank, and OECD’s Development Assistance Committee (OECD-DAC) are sponsoring the Second International Roundtable on Managing for Development Results in Marrakech, Morocco on 4-5 February. AfDB is the host, and President Chino will lead the ADB delegation.

Background

In March 2002, at the Monterrey Conference on Financing for Development, the Presidents of the five MDBs signed a joint statement focusing on the issue of measuring, monitoring, and managing for development results. They agreed this was a priority area for harmonization among their institutions and committed themselves to the next steps to be taken. That led to the First International Roundtable that took place at the World Bank, Washington, D.C. in June 2002, which also included representatives from borrowing and donor countries, other international agencies, and civil society.

Purpose

Participants will discuss the challenges of managing for development results at country level, and ways in which countries and aid agencies are addressing these issues on the ground.

They will also discuss how the donor community can better coordinate support for planning, statistical systems, and monitoring and evaluation capacity in countries.

Expected Outputs

A desired outcome of the meeting will be endorsement of common principles on managing for development results, including commitment to specific actions for 2004.

Participants

  • ministers of finance, development, and planning from about 35 partner countries
  • heads of about 30 multilateral and bilateral development agencies
  • Chairman of OECD-DAC
  • Presidents of MDBs
