The conference was concluded on 28 May 2004, with a resolution of the Gender and Water Session prepared by the participants, and endorsed by the conference organizers during the closing plenary session. View the following:

Background

The Interstate Water Coodination Commission of Central Asia (ICWC) and the Global Water Partnership Caucus of Central Asia (GWP CACENA) organized the Central Asian International Scientific-Applied Conference to promote awareness on water problems, particularly in the areas of transboundary water resources management.

The conference had the two specific objectives:

  • Present the results of a number of water projects being implemented in the region; and
  • Exchange opinions on more acute aspects of water resources management.

ADB's Role

ADB was invited to make a presentation on the role of women in water management, and facilitate a special session on Gender and Water. Jennifer Francis, ADB's Social Development Specialist (Gender and Development), served as resource person.

The objectives of the Gender and Water session were:

  • highlight the variety and complexity of gender
  • understand the relation between gender and water issues
  • discuss opportunities for the implementation of gender sensitive water programs in the region
  • formulate recommendations for the arrangement of future related activities

Results of the Conference

The discussions resulted in the affirmation of commitment and cooperation of various organizations to start up an informal gender and water network to implement activities in the areas of:

  • raising awareness of gender issues in the region
  • developing knowledge and understanding of gender issues in water management
  • exchanging experience and best practice of gender sensitive water management

A resolution of the Gender and Water Session was prepared by the participants, and endorsed by the conference organizers during the closing plenary session.
