Background

For Asia and the Pacific, home to the majority of the world’s poor, Target 10 of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) is an especially ambitious but critical goal. To halve the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and sanitation by 2015 is not an easy task.

With less than a decade to go, what progress has the Asia and Pacific region achieved in meeting MDG Target 10? What more is required? How will meeting MDG Target 10 advance countries toward achieving all 8 MDGs?

Five years after the MDGs were formulated in 2000, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), and World Health Organization (WHO) entered into a partnership to study the progress of Asian countries toward achieving Target 10. The result is a new publication entitled Asia Water Watch 2015: Are Countries in Asia on Track to Meet Target 10 of the Millennium Development Goals?”

Asia Water Watch 2015 uses the latest data available to assess each country’s progress toward MDG Target 10. It also defines the financing required to improve much needed water supply and sanitation services, as well as recommends critical changes that key stakeholders need to undertake to reach the Target 10.
