4th Asia Clean Energy Forum 2009: Investing in Solutions that Address Climate Change and Energy Security

Policymakers, private sector firms, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) across Asia gathered on 17-19 June 2009 in Manila, Philippines during the 4th Asia Clean Energy Forum: Investing in Solutions that Address Climate Change and Energy Security.

The forum promoted best practices in policy and finance and sought to catalyze actions that respond to the region's climate, access, and energy security challenges.

The forum served as a platform for exchanging experiences and forging new partnerships to respond to clean energy and climate change challenges in Asia and the pacific region. It provided an opportunity for sharing best practices on enabling policies, market incentives and proven financing models that foster increased investment in energy efficiency, cleaner fossil energy and renewable energy projects. It also served as a platform for sharing ways to:

  • catalyze public-private partnerships between energy producers, equipment suppliers, end-users and government agencies that will lead to increased deployment of clean energy technologies and systems
  • explore opportunities for improved cooperation among donors and other stakeholders involved in financing clean energy programs in the region
  • identify financing challenges for project developers and initiate steps to provide follow-on assistance

Well over 700 participants from 47 countries took part, comprising a diverse group of experts, including stakeholders from governments, national and multinational banks, carbon and clean energy investment funds, project developers and service providers, environmental regulators, academe, civil society, and development partners and other international organizations attended the 4th Asia Clean Energy Forum.

More than 80 distinguished persons from governments, financial institutions, project developers and service providers, civil society, academia, and international organizations led the discussions during three plenary and 15 break-out sessions under three major tracks:

  • strategies, solutions, and options, including cleaner fuels, demand-side and renewable energy options, including access to energy
  • climate change issues and options through sustainable cities and urban transport
  • finance and market development, including carbon financing

The 4thAsia Clean Energy Forum was jointly organized by ADB and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and also co-sponsored by the governments of Australia, Japan, Norway, Spain, and Sweden, and event management by Koelnmesse.
