Scope

The Project will be implemented over a period of 30 month and will rehabilitate a major section of the Kandahar-Spin Boldak road - one of the six major cross-border links with neighboring countries. The focus will be on the settlement areas around Kandahar for the participating refugee families and displaced persons (DPs), providing training in road construction, supporting social services such as education, helath and child care and extending credit facilities for start up income generating activities for home-based women.

Objectives

Overall Objective

To pilot sustainable approaches to assist the refugees in their repatriation, settlement and integration and contribute towards economic development and social stability by providing employment opportunities for returning refugees and DPs through road rehabilitation and reconstruction.

Project Purpose

To initiate a gradual process wherein refugees are repatriated from their current location outside the country, temporarily accommodated in transitional settlements away from Kabul, provided with opportunities for skill upgrading, jobs in reconstruction activities, credit for income generation and social services, and thus paving the way for their smooth reintegration.

Expected Output

At the end of the project, as refugees start moving on to their places of origin, the physical facilities for social services constructed under the project will become part of the social infrastructure of Kandahar.

Main Project Components and Activities

The Project has five components; (i) road improvement, (ii) training and community mobilization (iii) education; (iv) health and (v) microcredit.
