Need for gender equality in workplace and operations stressed at International Women's Day celebration

7 March 2008

Management and more than 300 staff celebrated IWD on 7 March at a breakfast forum on Financing for Gender Equality. VP Lohani [ PDF: 26kb | 4 pages ] spoke on the progress in GAP and the expected outcomes under GAP III. VP Schaefer-Preuss assured that the LTSF will continue to emphasize gender equality and women's empowerment in achieving inclusive growth. Guest speakers were Leonor Briones [ PDF: 523kb | 14 pages ], former Treasurer of the Philippine Government, and Victoria Garchitorena [ PDF: 43kb | 12 pages ], President of Ayala Foundation. BPMSD DG Kensaku Munenaga reaffirmed ADB's commitment in promoting gender equality in the workplace and in communities that ADB serves. Bangladesh Resident Mission

Loan 2070-BAN: Second Participatory Livestock Development (PLDP II)
8 March 2008

On 8 March 2008, PLDP II (Loan 2070) in collaboration with a local college (Kaunia Degree College, Rangpur, Bangladesh) organized a special event. Some 400 students were present. Their questions centered on social barriers which prevent rural girls from continuing to higher levels of education and participating in income generating activities. The students were unanimous in stressing their desire to be educated and skilled, and to be able to contribute to family income and to progress in society. Loan 1831-BAN: Small Scale Water Resources Sector Development Project II
6 March 2008

Beneficiaries of the Small Scale Water Resources Sector Development Project II spoke at the International Women's Day event organized by Local Consultative Sub-Group on Women's Advancement and Gender Equality. Salma Nazrul, one of the beneficiaries, gave a speech [ PDF: 17kb | 1 page ] on how the project has greatly affected her life. See photos [ PDF: 125kb | 1 page ].

Martha Chen of Harvard's Kennedy School and colleagues from Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing (WIEGO) talked about recent trends in the informal economy and WIEGO's initiatives, followed by discussions with ADB staff.


SLRM: Bangladesh team shares experiences on incorporating gender issues in projects
March 2008, Bangladesh

The Bangladesh Local Government Engineering Department shared views on its gender strategy in infrastructure. BRM staff spoke on incorporating gender issues in ADB-funded projects while the Sri Lanka National Water Supply and Drainage Board gave a presentation


PRM:Gender and access to micro financial services workshop
March 2008, Pakistan

CD Peter Fedon opened the workshop held at the National Institute of Banking and Finance, cosponsored by ADB and the State Bank of Pakistan and Ministry of Finance. He highlighted ADB's contribution to the microfinance sector's development and the innovative approaches including 'branchless banking' and use of Geographic Information System (GIS).


Meeting to promote gender equality in Lao PDR in agriculture and forestry
13 to 14 February 2008, Lao PDR

The Government of the Lao PDR held a nationwide consultation and workshop to determine concrete steps to promote gender equality in agriculture and forestry sector, as supported by TA 4339-LAO: Study of Gender Inequality in Women's Access to Land, Forests, and Water.


Gender and social development CoP: Engendering mainstream organizations - Tools and lessons learned
29 January 2008

Nancy Spence, former Director of the Social Transformation Programmes Division, Commonwealth Secretariat, London, and currently Director of Economic and Social Development Consulting Services, Toronto, discussed the 4-step mainstreaming model applicable to all organizations during her visit to ADB Headquarters.

India to pay families to promote girls' welfare*

In an attempt to battle gender-based abortion that has seen an estimated 10 million baby girls aborted over the last two decades, Indian authorities have announced plans to pay families who raise girls. The plan would have the government pay families incremental sums, with the largest payout occurring when a girl child reaches 18, is in good health and has received basic education.

Nazari, an Afghan parliamentarian, is the driving force behind the country's first political party dedicated to women's rights and issues. She launched National Need on February 19 at a ceremony in Kabul, saying the party hopes to put women's rights at the forefront of the national political debate.


INDIA: Women to have greater say in planning through gender-budgeting*

Women may soon be able to have a greater say at different levels and stages of developmental planning, policy and program formulation. The government is coming up with guidelines on 'How to practice Gender-Budgeting' for all the central ministries in the country.
