Each DMC participant will set up a project office and a steering committee with members representing the ministries of finance, planning and investment, and health, as well as the private food industry and the nongovernment organization (NGO) community.

Scope

The Project will pilot test an umbrella regional program for delivering micronutrient-fortified salt and wheat flour to the populations of participating Asian countries in transition (ACT), Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

The Project will particularly target poor women of reproductive age and children.

The Project will end in August 2002.

Objectives

Overall Objective

To reduce the prevalence of iodine deficiency disorders and iron deficiency anemia in ACT, thereby reducing prevalence of poverty through raised intelligence, improved learning, and greater productivity.

Project Purpose

To strengthen the food production capacity in ACT by providing the means to fortify salt and flour and regulate the food sector appropriately.

Expected Output

Roundtable to reach consensus on regional standards for food fortification, marketing and trade; Supply of forticants and equipment for fortifying salt and flour according to international best practice; Strengthen regulatory capacity for the food sector; and Strengthen consumer demand through NGO partnerships

Main Project Components and Activities

The Project will have four components:

  • roundtable conference
  • fortification of salt and flour
  • support regulatory authorities
  • social marketing to create demand by the poor

Any Other Relevant Information

  • A supplementary grant for Azerbaijan amounting to $850,000 was approved by the Board on 23 October 2001. Total JFPR grant for the Project in six countries is now $6.85 million.

  • An ADB-produced video presentation entitled Central Asia's Hidden Hunger is now available for sale. This film was presented during the Roundtable Meeting in Almaty, Kazakhstan on 10-12 October 2001.
