External Forum on Gender and Development, 1999

The Policy on Gender and Development provided for the establishment of an External Forum on Gender (EFG) to facilitate dialogue with external experts on gender issues. The first meeting of a 14-member EFG was held at the ADB headquarters in early November 2001. During this first meeting, the EFG were briefed on the ADB's strategic framework, key strategies and policies relevant to GAD and loan and technical assistance projects with strong gender focus were presented.

The establishment of the EFG will enable the Bank to regularly tap into current thinking on gender issues and maintain an ongoing dialogue on the GAD program with key experts from government, NGOs, the academe and civil society. The EFG will also be an avenue to enhance its GAD profile and disseminate information on the ADB's activities addressing gender.

Two External Forum on Gender meetings are tentatively scheduled in May and November 2002.
