Environment Book to be Launched in Bangkok on Tuesday
BANGKOK, THAILAND (3 August 2006) - To promote a better understanding of the complex relationships among poverty, health, and the environment, ADB and the World Conservation Union (IUCN) have jointly produced a book, to be launched in Bangkok on Tuesday, 8 August. Millions of poor people remain dependent on natural resources for their livelihoods and the ecological services these resources provide, yet they are being degraded as a result of processes often beyond the control of the poor. The new book, "Poverty, Health and Ecosystems: Experience from Asia," collects 16 case studies from around the Asia and Pacific region illustrating contemporary issues and approaches to dealing with sustainable resource management and poverty reduction. The main aims are to promote better understanding of the environmental determinants of poverty and to improve strategies for incorporating poverty and health considerations into natural resource management. The studies also examine ways to overcome governance constraints to reversing environmental degradation. The launch takes place at 12:30 at the Novotel Lotus Hotel, Sukhumvit Soi 33 Bangkok 10110 Tel. 662 261 0111 Fax. 662 262 1700, Leading the launch will be ADB Director General Bindu Lohani and IUCN Regional Director for Asia Aban Marker Kabraji.
