BEIJING, PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA – The Asian Development Bank (ADB) today kicked off a photo contest for young people to submit their best images depicting efforts in addressing environmental issues in the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
“It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words so we are inviting all youth in the country to give us their visual take on achieving China’s Green Dream,” said Hamid L. Sharif, ADB Country Director in the PRC.
The MyView photo contest asks participants to submit images on the topic of “China’s Green Dream.” ADB is looking for creative images from everyday life in the PRC, with a caption, in Chinese, of no more than 50 words. The first prize winner will receive CNY5,000 and while two second prize winners and three third prize winners will get CNY3,000 and CNY2,000 respectively. All six winners will be invited to visit selected ADB-funded projects in the PRC.
Three decades of rapid economic growth means that millions of Chinese people have escaped poverty in an economy that has emerged as the second biggest in the world. However, this spectacular growth has resulted in serious environmental problems. Many of the PRC’s major cities suffer poor air and water quality. Meanwhile, rural areas face severe pollution of soil, rivers and lakes. The cost of pollution damage in the PRC is estimated to be 6-9% of gross domestic product.
PRC's youth are playing a big role in creating a "Green Dream." For example, many Chinese young couples have become eco-tourists in order to escape the pollution and stress of the country’s urban hyper growth. This has resulted in an increase in the number of national nature reserves from 34 in 1978 to 407 in 2013.
The contest is open to all non-professional photographers who are Chinese citizens of age between 16 and 30. Images must be taken personally by the photographer, be not previously published, and depict a scene in the PRC. Contestants can submit only one photo.
To enter the contest, contestants can submit their photographs with the registration form to email@example.com using the subject line “Entry to China’s Green Dream Contest.” They can also share contest photos on WeChat, Weibo, and other social media accounts. Photos can be submitted any time between 00:01 Beijing time on 25 February 2016 and midnight Beijing time 31 May 2016, with the winners announced on 16 June 2016.
Winners will be judged on merit by a panel of experts. Please see rules, prizes, and other information on the contest.
