ADB President Offers Condolences Following Earthquake in Central Philippines

MANILA, PHILIPPINES (18 October 2013) – Asian Development Bank President Takehiko Nakao has offered his deepest condolences to the people and Government of the Philippines for the loss of lives, suffering and damage caused by the earthquake and aftershocks that hit central Philippines on 15 October.

"As a longstanding development partner of the Government of the Philippines, we assure you of our fullest cooperation and support during this difficult time," Mr. Nakao said in a letter dated 16 October to Philippine President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III.

"On behalf of the Board, Management and staff of the Asian Development Bank, I offer my deepest condolences to the Government and the people of the Philippines in the aftermath of the disaster and my sincere sympathy to those who have lost their loved ones, homes, and livelihood," he added.

More than 170 people have been killed and millions affected by the earthquake that struck Visayas and surrounding islands.
