Lao People's Democratic Republic: Decentralized Rural Infrastructure Development

News Brief | 29 May 2012

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved the following technical assistance:

Although the agriculture and natural resources sector is the largest contributor to Lao PDR's gross domestic product, more than half of farming households are subsistence farmers earning about $200 a year, and productive rural infrastructure and farmer organizations remain underdeveloped. This technical assistance will help identify good practices in the operation, maintenance and cost-recovery of productive rural infrastructure, such as irrigation schemes, and help strengthen local government to plan, implement and monitor productive rural infrastructure development.

$1 million grant from the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction, to be administered by ADB.
