Non-motorized transport (NMT) includes walking, bicycles, tricycles, pedicabs, and other human-powered vehicles. Improving non-motorized transport facilities – such as pedestrian areas and bicycle lanes – is the most cost-effective way of reducing transport costs, which can reach up to 40% of income in low-income households in some developing nations. By piloting the development and implementation of quality pedestrian areas and NMT facilities and technologies in Indonesia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, and the Philippines, this technical assistance will help improve access to jobs and services for the urban poor and vulnerable groups, as well as provide a basis for future scaling-up of these types of interventions.
