APEC Financial Regulators Training Initiative: Regional Seminar on Corporate Governance and Compliance

This training program, hosted by Capital Market Development Authority of Maldives, covers best practices in roles and responsibilities of directors in order to promote investor confidence and meet stakeholder expectations. It outlines the balance of skills, experience and independence required at director level that is appropriate to the nature and extent of company operations. Various structures of boards will be examined and how director’s performance should be assessed.

The need for integrity together with responsible and ethical decision-making is also demonstrated. Case studies will be used to demonstrate the corporate governance reforms as well as the corporate governance challenges. Improvements to corporate governance can be attributed to a combination of multiple factors, most importantly ownership changes, including greater outside (foreign) ownership, and deep institutional reforms including strengthening of minority rights and requiring greater representation of outside directors.
