IWRM Executive Retreat on Leadership in River Basins

Background

Leadership for integrated water resources management (IWRM) in Asia’s river basins nowadays poses unprecedented challenges that require executives to span boundaries and guide investments across a range of organizations as well as engineering, economic, social and environmental disciplines. How are IWRM executives maximizing their leadership in preparing river basins for the future? How do they enable win-win solutions among basin stakeholders to advance the IWRM process in the basin “up the spiral”? How do they keep political commitment to support sustained change over time? How do they expand their autonomy to take action rapidly and effectively? How do they address the water-food-energy nexus in the basin? How do they inspire staff, partners and stakeholders for a bigger vision, higher performance as change agents, smarter knowledge management, and a paperless office?

The Network of Asian River Basin Organizations (NARBO) will for the first time convene a retreat for a small group of executives who have demonstrated how to use their management position in river basin organizations, ministries and water councils to show exemplary leadership for IWRM in river basins. The 2-day retreat will be followed by a study visit to the Brantas river basin on 22 June. Participating IWRM executives can choose to extend their visit to join NARBO’s International Seminar on Corporate RBOs in Asia which will be hosted by PJT 1 on 23-24 June.

Objectives

Joining the retreat with NARBO’s management team, the executives will share their experiences supported by case studies of effective leadership in their river basins, and explore keys for success in three areas:

  1. Leadership across organizations in the basin
  2. Leadership within organizations
  3. Personal leadership.

Organizers

The retreat will be organized by NARBO and hosted by Perum Jasa Tirta 1 Public Corporation (PJT 1, the RBO for the Brantas and Solo River Basins) and the Center for River Basin Organizations and Management.

Target participants

The IWRM executives from NARBO member river basin organizations will be invited.
