State of Ecosystem Service Markets in Asia and the Pacific

Background

The meeting is being organized under RETA 7302 - Capturing Economic Benefits from Ecosystem Services (CEBES) - that aims to promote expansion of markets for ecosystem services in Asia and the Pacific. The TA is working to develop and exchange knowledge on use of Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) approaches, particularly that of managing land use and forests for carbon sequestration through the so-called REDD+ approach.

Representatives from seven DMCs - Cambodia, Lao PDR, Nepal, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Thailand and Viet Nam - will discuss existing REDD+ and other PES mechanisms (e.g., for watershed protection and biodiversity conservation) being tested around the region.

Objectives

To contribute to knowledge exchange on ADB's focused actions to address climate change challenges particularly that of managing land use and forests for carbon sequestration.

To help ADB departments identify levers for incorporating appreciation for, and application of markets for ecosystem services into ADB development investments.

Expected outputs

Results from this conference will feed into a regional synthesis publication. Workshop summary will be uploaded on the ADB website.
