Workshop on Improving the Regional Distribution of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Projects in Asia and the Pacific

Purpose

This workshop aims to increase the number of CDM projects in countries currently hosting fewer than 10 registered CDM projects. This is also in line with Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol decision 2/CMP.4 on regional and sub-regional distribution and capacity building. The workshop is jointly organized with Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), Japan together with UNFCCC Secretariat.

Objectives

At the end of the workshop, participants will have:

  • Increased awareness on reasons for slow CDM project development process among target country Designated National Authorities (DNAs)
  • Increased awareness on latest developments on CDM modalities and procedures
  • Proposals for possible systemic reforms to enable CDM project promotion by DNA
  • Increased number of CDM projects in the region
  • Enhanced regional distribution of CDM projects particularly in countries currently hosting fewer than 10 CDM projects

Target participants

This first workshop is organised for participants from South, South East and East Asia with focus on target countries like Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Lao, Mongolia, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Lessons learned from this workshop will be instrumental in organising separate workshops for target countries in the Central and West Asia and Pacific regions. A maximum of 100 participants is envisaged in the first workshop - tentative breakdown of which is given below.

  • Potential project developers (Private sectors, government entities, etc) - 3 from each target country (total 21)
  • DNA representatives of target countries (and other special invitees from countries which have significant number of registered CDM projects ) - 2 DNA representatives from each target country (total 14)
  • Project Sponsors (Public sector, bilateral agencies, financial institutions, etc.) - 2 from each target country (total 14)
  • Resource speakers, participating IGES and ADB staff (total 20)
