Workshop on Technologies for Water and Wastewater Management
Background
Technology options for water and wastewater management are not widely known to many planners and decision-makers. The lack of capacity to select and apply them to local conditions has resulted in choices that could have been better. Clearly, there is a need to develop alternative approaches and solutions.
This workshop is part of the initiative of ADB and partners in promoting a wastewater management revolution in Asia and the Pacific. Specifically, the workshop intends to set off a change in approach towards selecting appropriate technologies and possibly adopting new technologies that are more cost effective on a life cycle cost basis to facilitate viability and sustainability of water and wastewater management systems.
Learning objective
The workshop aims to enhance knowledge of ADB and DMC staff on technology options and their institutional and professional capacity to mainstream emerging green and cost-effective technologies in the water and sanitation projects.
Workshop design
The workshop is designed to provide an overview of a range of available technologies from conventional to innovative systems. The focus of discussions will be on potential for application and scaling up, and approaches to shape sector policies, planning and project design. The workshop will involve:
- discussion on demand-based or environment-based or regulation-based triggers for technological development and adoption
- comparison of technology options in terms of complexity, energy efficiency, cost-effectiveness, low footprint, environmental improvement, reuse applications and revenue generation
- presentation of experience of selected countries in applying new technologies and lessons learned
- introduction to innovative technologies of selected companies and examination of their viability for wider application in various settings
- emerging technology and market trends that could change the viability and economics of water and wastewater management
Target participants
ADB staff working on water and wastewater projects and members of the Water, Urban Development, and Environment CoPs are expected to participate. Government planners and concerned staff of water and wastewater utilities, public works, and environment departments of DMCs are invited.
