World Water Week: Eye on Asia

Background

Asia is increasingly a continent in the grip of a water crisis. With falling per capita water endowments exacerbated by climate change impacts, the burdens on farm and industrial communities, and town and country dwellers are increasingly severe. With six-tenths of the world's population, Asia is at the forefront of water problems and solutions.

In the 2008 World Water Week, ADB and its partners organized "Asia Day"—the first time that the region's water sector was given special focus. Asia Day promoted a better understanding of the water and sanitation issues in the region and the efforts of governments and development agencies to address these issues.

In 2009, ADB and partner organizations organized "Eye on Asia," a day-long series of activities that highlighted lessons from the Asia-Pacific experience.

This year, ADB and partners are once more organizing Eye on Asia at the Stockholm World Water Week. Sessions will focus on water quality issues that pose substantial threats to secure water supplies for food, energy, economic growth and human health. It will also focus on innovative solutions that meet water and sanitation challenges in local communities, cities, river basins, and at national level.

Objectives

This year's Eye on Asia sessions will discuss water quality issues that pose substantial threats to secure water supplies for food, energy, economic growth and human health.

Organizers

These "Eye on Asia" activities are being organized by ADB and the following partners:

  • Korea Water (K-Water)
  • Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI)
  • International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)
